Children Need to Learn What to Value the Most

“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” — Luke 11:28

We are in the long process of purging our garage. The hubster and I are finding a lot of things we and our kids treasured. But we did a lousy job of protecting them and the mice and spiders ended up enjoying them more than our family did.

When I read this verse, I realize that I can be as careless about God’s Words in my heart as I am about the things in my garage. It makes me ask the question: What do I value most in my life? And if I value it, how do I protect it? It is such a temptation to work at protecting things and causes that are important to me and forget that the message of salvation and souls is the only thing that is eternal.

God yearns that we raise our children to treasure his Word above all else in their life. He will sometimes give them hardships or take away things they love so they are ready to embrace the greater gift of what he says. When hard times come, like the days we live in right now, the Spirit is working to teach us to deliberately and thankfully guard our greatest gift.

A Daily Prayer:
Dear Jesus, Thank you for revealing your message of salvation to families across the globe. When we are tempted to want to give our kids heaven on earth, remind us instead to teach them to protect your Words in their heart that give them the reality of heaven forever. Help us to listen to you in your Word more than we listen to the voices of this world that would love for us to doubt you and live in fear and despair. Amen.
