Making the Most of Every Opportunity

Be very careful, then, how you live –

not as unwise but as wise,

making the most of every opportunity

because the days are evil.

Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

Do not get drunk on wine which leads to debauchery.

Instead, be filled with the Spirit,

speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.

Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,

always giving thanks to God the Father for everything,

in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 5:15-20

Every moment in this dark world is precious because it is an opportunity to share the truth and the love of Jesus.

That truth fights the natural reaction to fill my moments with ways to escape the chaos of evil.

I experience it in church service. As I walk into church, my mind is on the stresses of life that tug at my attention. But then the music starts, the Word of God is read, the sermon explains his truth, and I realize how very little my problems and stresses are compared to the truth: that I have everything because Jesus has me.

God wants us to take and recreate that moment as we walk out the church doors—to speak his forgiveness to a child who feels guilty, to sing his love songs at bedtime as a family, to listen to his Word in song as we travel to the stress of school and work. Conversations, emails, and texts are all opportunities to share the truth that Jesus is right there with us.

A Daily Prayer:
O Jesus, You are King of kings and you are with me. You hold the countless galaxies in your hand. You know how many hairs are on every head. Give me your eyes to see the moments today as opportunities to share your thoughts instead of complaining, worrying, and fear. Thank you for your mercy for all the moments I do not trust you. Your forgiveness alone is what gives me life and peace. Amen.
