Seeds, God’s Word, and Life

He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like.

A man scatters seed on the ground.

Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up,

the seed sprouts and grows,

though he does not know how.

Mark 4:26-27

The seed is the Word of God. The most important thing we can do as parents and grandparents and friends of little children is to scatter the seed. To share with them that Jesus is God’s Son who has saved us from our addictions and selfishness.

But the seed sprouting, sticking its head out of the soil and growing is God’s work, not ours. As we share the truths of God with our children, he will grow his Word inside their hearts. Just like a growing plant, it will not be something we can measure from day to day.

The world gives so many compelling messages to our children to be defined and accepted by what they do or how comfortable they are or how well their bodies look. It is so comforting to know that God is very active in growing the truths of his Word in our children’s hearts.

I have included a few ideas to scatter seeds in your family. Please add your own ideas to the list.

Scattering Seed:

As you explore the outdoors with your children this spring, look for seeds and sprouts as you explain to them how God grows his love in our hearts.

Carve out some time every day to read from a Bible story book or Bible to your children. Ask them how the story shows them that Jesus loves them.

Put a container of seeds and a potted plant close to where your Bible is kept as a visual reminder of God’s active love for us.

Keep a list of comforting promises from God (Bible verses, Christian hymns and songs) that you can share during hard times in your child’s life.

Find a church if you don’t have one that preaches the clear truth that Jesus has saved us without any added works on our part. Having a family in Christ that can share life with you is essential.
